Symmetry, Structure, Sanctuary
2019 / Triptych PhotographsWhen it comes to masjids (mosques) in the United States, these buildings often lack the physical beauty that defines masjids in the east, which is due to being misunderstood and feared by individuals that lack understanding in the west. The sole purpose of a masjid is to bring Muslims together to connect with God and each other in a safe environment, a concept that is somehow too hard to comprehend in this modern era. The piece aims to combat the negative western view of these sacred spaces and instead display the beauty from the point of view of people that call it home.
Symmetry refers to the aspect of balance, not just religiously, but also physically. The balance of proportions of prayer rugs, intricate mosaics, arabesques and the qibla wall facing Mecca all possess this harmony.
The variety of masjids around the world can be shown in Structure and how each building has its own personal characteristics, but overall has the same purpose: to congregate Muslims from all over the world.
Sanctuary is a combination of collective emotions that are felt in this space: quiet, spiritual, educational and intimate yet the center of an entire community.
